I think about the intricate nature of grieving, and its impact on the individual’s evolving sense of self.
The paintings are large-scale works on Mylar, which bring together drawing, painting, assemblage and collage. In the act of physically cutting up my paintings, I reclaim and recycle bits and pieces, which I then use to rebuild narrative and consider the interpretation of memory.
I started these paintings after the death of someone I loved dearly. I began to think that all the paintings that I created where about that loss, seeking to honour the memory by helping me remember every detail, but then slowly, I began to realise that the paintings were about all the losses, mine, yours and those of strangers. Greif is ubiquitous and inescapable, we all feel it, fear it, and carry it with us, in our own ways.
